Hospitalizations Resulting from Suicide Attempts Among Youth--Hawaii

Why important?
In 2005, suicide was the third leading cause of death among youths and young adults in Hawaii.

Risk factors
Teens who attempt suicide almost always have serious problems, such as depression or substance abuse. Teens that have attempted suicide in the past are much more likely than other teens to attempt suicide again in the future. Other risk factors include a history of physical and/or sexual abuse, poor communication with parents, and lack of access or an unwillingness to seek mental health treatment.

How is Hawaii doing?

Hawaii had more than 1,400 hospitalizations and emergency room visits for suicide attempts last year: Over half of all suicide attempts were under the age of 30.  Hawaii’s hospitalization rate among youths and young adults aged 10-29 was up in 2006 compared to previous years.  While attempted suicide rates are higher in females than males, the hospitalization rate among females has decreased 20 percent since 2003.  However, the hospitalization among males increased 40 percent in 2006 compared to 2003.

The hospitalization rate for suicide is 1.4 - 2.0 times higher on West Hawaii, East Hawaii and Maui than other areas of the State of Hawaii.
